  Bill Cardwell

Bill Cardwell is a retired Senior Research Associate of Chevron Research Company. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from the California Institute of Technology. Cardwell is a registered Professional Engineer and an emeritus member of the Acoustical Society of America, The American Chemical Society, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Bill Cardwell's research on the trumpet began in the late fifties as a hobby that combined his scientific background with his interest in the trumpet, which he had played since the age of nine.

In the early sixties, using fundamental physics and mathematics, Bill derived equations that made possible the first predictions of trumpet bell air column shapes.

His key advance over previous investigators was to take into effect, quantitatively, the tuning effects of the mouthpiece and leadpipe. He has 22 patents and publications dealing with various acoustical, mechanical and mathematical disciplines. We have been consulting with Bill for over 25 years.
